The Shira Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s less-traveled paths, starting high on the Shira Plateau at around 3,500 meters. It’s essentially the older sibling of the Lemosho Route, sharing much of the same trail after the first day or two, but it begins at a much higher altitude. That means breathtaking views from the very start… and a higher risk of altitude sickness if you’re not already well-acclimatized.
While it’s scenic, adventurous, and uncrowded, Shira isn’t the best choice for absolute beginners or those without prior high-altitude experience. But for well-prepared trekkers who want big views from day one, this route can be unforgettable.
