The 6 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking Marangu Route is the most popular and classic path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, it is the only trail with hut accommodations, making it more comfortable than camping routes.

Unlike the 5-day option, the 6-day itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, which greatly improves summit success rates. This trek takes climbers through rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the arctic summit zone, offering diverse scenery and an unforgettable adventure to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa.

Itinerary

Day by Day
Day 1: Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

After breakfast in Moshi, drive to Marangu Gate (1,870m), where you will register before beginning your trek. The trail winds through lush rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and colorful birds. After 4–5 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) for dinner and overnight stay.

Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

Today, the trail leaves the rainforest and enters the heath and moorland zone. Views open up to reveal both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. After a 6–7 hour hike, you’ll arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m), where you will spend the night.

Acclimatization at Horombo Hut

This extra day at Horombo Hut is essential for proper acclimatization. You will hike towards Mawenzi Ridge (4,400m), where you can enjoy stunning views before descending back to the hut for lunch, relaxation, and overnight stay. This day helps prepare your body for the higher altitude.

Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

Leaving Horombo, the trail gradually ascends into the alpine desert. The landscape is barren yet breathtaking, with wide views of the upper slopes. After 6–7 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Kibo Hut (4,700m) at the foot of the summit path. After an early dinner, you’ll rest and prepare for the midnight climb to the summit.

Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Summit day begins around midnight with a challenging climb up steep switchbacks to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Standing at the Roof of Africa as the sun rises is an unforgettable moment. After photos and celebrations, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for the night. Trekking time is 10–14 hours.

Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi

The final day is a steady descent through moorland and lush rainforest back to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you will collect your summit certificate before being driven back to Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest. Trekking time is 5–6 hours.
